Restoration

To restore Microsoft 365 data, go to the main menu under the Backup tab, then click on the dedicated "Microsoft 365" section.

Microsoft 365 Backup Section

You will find a complete list of performed backups, which can be filtered by:
- User
- Organization
- Plugin (Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, or Teams)
- Data type (backup or restoration)
Once you locate the backup you need, simply click on the associated action to open details and restore the target item.

Restore Details

This interface allows you to restore a Microsoft 365 item. Only one item can be restored at a time.

Tip: You can search by user name via the filter in the "Name" column.

For Exchange and OneDrive backups, there are three restoration options:

  • To the original location
  • In a different folder within the original account
  • To another user within your organization

Restoration Options

If you select one of the last two options, you can then choose the folder name, which will be created at the root of the Exchange or OneDrive object structure.

Restored files will contain all historical versions. If the file still exists in the original environment, it will be overwritten. In the case of a folder restoration, existing files will be merged.

You can schedule a confirmation email to notify you once your restorations are complete.

Note:
For Teams and SharePoint backups, restoration is performed directly to the original location.

Restoration Limitations

This section presents the limitations of "Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange".

  • Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange does not support restoration via PowerShell Direct, VIX API, or vSphere Automation API.
  • Sending objects larger than 3 MB may fail.
  • Mass restoration (restoring multiple objects) is not supported for public folder mailboxes. Use individual object restoration instead.
  • Mass restoration of Exchange mailboxes can only be performed to the original location. For other locations, use single mailbox, folder, or item restoration.
  • Mailboxes can only be restored to the same mailbox type (e.g., user mailbox to user mailbox, archive mailbox to archive mailbox).
  • For restoring In-Place Hold or Litigation Hold items to the original location, consider the following:
  • Restoring In-Place Hold items is not supported for on-premises Exchange Server 2013 due to EWS limitations.
  • To restore In-Place Hold items for Exchange 2016 mailboxes, these mailboxes must have In-Place Hold enabled and applied at least once with the creation of the DiscoveryHolds system folder.
    • Otherwise, the restoration will fail with the following error:
      • "Failed to restore In-Place Hold Items. Restore of In-Place Hold Items into Exchange 2013 is not supported." For more information on enabling In-Place Hold and Litigation Hold, refer to this Microsoft article.
  • Mass restoration using modern authentication with the Microsoft Entra app certificate is not supported for public folder mailboxes. Use standard individual object restoration instead.
  • Mass restoration of Exchange mailboxes can only be performed to the original location. For other locations, use single mailbox, folder, or item restoration.
  • [For Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange included in Veeam Backup & Replication] Full mailbox or selected mailbox item restoration to the original location is available with the Veeam Universal License. With a legacy socket-based license, the Enterprise or Enterprise Plus editions of Veeam Backup & Replication are required.
  • [For restoring from Veeam Backup & Replication backups] If your Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange is part of a standalone Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 installation, you cannot restore your Microsoft Exchange data by default. To enable this feature, install the Enterprise or higher edition of Veeam Backup & Replication on the machine.
